Galsco Martin rushes for 170 yards and the Stony Point defense keeps The Woodlands in check as they earn second round playoff win
Using a stingy defensive effort that held the Woodlands scoreless in the first half, Stony Point earned a trip to Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco next weekend as they moved into round three of the high school football playoffs with a 21-7 decision over The Woodlands.
Stony Point's defense made sure early on that The Woodlands were going to have to overcome a defense that was looking to give the home crowd plenty to be excited about. And that didn't take long.
The Stony Point Tigers played a first quarter that any coach would love to see from a defense, especially in a playoff game. The Tigers forced three turnovers and held The Woodlands to minus yardage over the first 12-minutes of play. But even with the stellar effort, humble Stony Point Head Coach Craig Chessher knew his defense was capable of more. "The first quarter we had a couple of mental lapses and the second quarter we came out and didn't make a couple of tackles," Chessher said.
Stony Point put thier first points of the game on the board midway through the first quarter when Stephen Williams hauled in a 3-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Nyk McKissic. The only points to show after The Tigers managed to drive into The Woodlands territory early and often.
The Woodlands offense seemed to find a spark later in the first half as they managed to drive to within field goal range a couple of times but the Tiger defense stiffened on both occasions. The Woodlands missed on one field-goal attempt and decided to punt on the other occasion.
The Woodlands defense had their moments in the first half as well. They held Stony Point on two fourth-down attempts and benefited from a missed Tiger field goal attempt.
Stony Point was later able to solve The Woodlands defense for another first half score when Glasco Martin got loose for a 39-yard TD run with just seconds to play in the first half. "I saw they were pressing the front side so I was trying to make some cutbacks," said Martin.
Capitalizing on a Stony Point special teams fumble in the third quarter, The Woodlands was able to cut into the 14-0 Tiger lead a few plays later when Ryan Eastman punched it in on a fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line to make the score 14-7 after the PAT.
Stony Point would add another touchdown in the second half and their defense would continue their dominating play to secure the win and a trip to Waco next week where they will take on the winner of the Garland vs. Tyler Lee game. Martin finished his impressive night with 170 yards rushing and two touchdowns as he helped the Tigers control the ball in the second half.
"Our offense controlled the ball in the fourth-quarter and we came away with the victory so I am proud of our offense and defense," said Chessher.
