Lake Travis wins in convincing fashion by dominating LBJ in bi-district championship

With wind gusts reeking havoc with any football that made its way airborne, Lake Travis made sure it was not the hard blowing winds from a cold front that would be remembered on this night. Instead the most likely memory from the blustery night will be their blowout win over LBJ as they got their quest for yet another state title underway with a 55-14 win Friday night.

Not able to use their reliable passing attack as much as they may like due to the hard blowing north wind, Lake Travis mixed in a steady ground attack to march into the end zone with regularity against an overmatched LBJ team.

Lake Travis quarterback Garrett Gilbert was able to overcome the wind to pass for three touchdowns on the night but it was his ability to run the ball that gave LBJ (6-4) fits. Gilbert rushed for four touchdowns in the first-half to help stake his team to a 34-14 halftime lead.

LBJ (11-0) scored twice in the first half with their first score coming on a Devarus Wright one-yard dive over the goal line that was followed by a missed extra point attempt. Then in the final moments of the first half he was able to connect on a hail mary pass before converting a two-point conversion to send his team into half time down 34-14.

Lake Travis came out in the second half and failed to field the opening kickoff which resulted in the ball going out of bounds at the 1-yard line. Just what LBJ was hoping for    right? You bet, but even having Lake Travis pinned against their own goal line would not help on this night. The Cavs responded by patiently droving 99-yards in 13 plays before Colton Volpe capped the drive off with a 3-yard TD run to put the lead at 41-14.

Lake Travis continued to keep LBJ in check through out the second half and was able to add two more scores before winning going away 55-14.

Lake Travis now moves on to take on Cibolo Steele next Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in San Marcos at Texas State's Bobcat Stadium.
