Lake Travis defeats Longview and caps perfect season with second straight state championship

Saturday at Floyd Casey stadium Garrett Gilbert did just what he had been doing all season long, shredding opposing defenses. This time it was the Longview Lobos who had no answer for Gilbert and the Cavalier offense as Lake Travis rolled to their second straight state title with a 48-23 win over Longview.

Gilbert passed for 356 yards and rushed for 85 yards on the day as his impressive performance led to the decisive win and 4-A division I crown. Last year Lake Travis won the 4-A division II title.

The Lake Travis offense had several receivers contribute as Gilbert hit four different receivers with touchdown passes. Two of his five TD passes were to Cade McCrary.

Longview's Da'Cedric Hunt rushed for 106 yards and three touchdowns and teammate Tyler McCray tallied 52 yards on seven carries before leaving the game with an injury.

With just over eight minutes to go in the second quarter Lake Travis took the lead on a 19-yard Gilbert touchdown pass to Chris Aydam.

Down 14-7 and looking for a spark, Longview went for it on fourth down and came up short just inside Lake Travis territory. Lake Travis then made them pay as Andy Erickson made his way into the end zone from 11-yards out to give the Cavaliers a 21-7 lead with just under 3 minutes to go in the first half.

Gilbert led the Cavaliers to another score late in the first half after taking advantage of a bad Lobos punt attempt. Gilbert used his legs instead of his arm this time as he took it in from two-yards out with under a minute remaining in the first half to extend the Cavalier lead to 21-7.

Lake Travis got the second half underway with yet another scoring drive as Gilbert ran for a one-yard touchdown and then with under four-minutes left in the third quarter he hit McCrary for a 56-yard touchdown pass.

The Lobos Da'Cedric Hunt scored all three Longview touchdowns, one of those being a 74-yard run. He finished with 115-yards rushing on the day.

By the time it was all said and done Gilbert had set the state record for career passing yards with 12,536 and the Cavaliers were once again state champions with the 48-23 win.
