UTSA Roadrunners Use a Late Surge to Defeat The Texas State Bobcats and Move to 5-1 in Conference Play

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA (10-8, 4-1) looked to move their Southland Conference Record to 4 -1 Wednesday evening as they took on rival Texas State (4-13, 0-6). With Jermini Malone leading the way, the Roadrunners came away with a 70-59 win as they kept the Bobcats winless in conference play in front of 1,428 fans at the UTSA Convocation Center.

Malone was making her first start for the Roadrunners and she responded by scoring a career high 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting. She was perfect from three-point land going 3-of-3 from behind the arc.

UTSA battled their way to a 26-14 lead at the 6:38 mark of the first half behind six points by Judy Jones who scored the first six points for UTSA. Whitney Wright helped out with eight early points with six of those coming on a pair of three-pointers.

Texas State fought back to cut the lead to 33-28 with 2:10 left in the first half when Mallory Williams scored on a three-point basket. Williams also had a steal and four assists to help the Bobcats stay within striking distance.

The Roadrunners took a 40-29 lead into the locker room as they closed the first half out with a 7-1 run that was capped by a pair of Ashleigh Franklin free throws.

The second half got underway with the Bobcats outscoring UTSA 10-3 to close within 43-39 with 15:28 to go in the game.

Texas State got to within two points on a couple of occasions at the second half wore on but UTSA responded each time before making a final push to close the Bobcats out and take the win by a score of 70-59.

UTSA had four players score in double digits. Malone led with her 16 points with teammate Judy Jones scoring 14 points to go along with six rebounds and two blocked shots.

Texas State’s Kelsey Krupa and Aimee Hilburn led the Bobcats in scoring with 15 points apiece. Hilburn also had 8 rebounds to lead the team in rebounding.
