Concordia Has a Record Setting Night as They Roll To a Convincing Win Over Rival Hardin-Simmons
Hardin-Simmons (4-16, 4-12 ASC) found themselves back on their heals from the opening seconds of Thursdays ASC match-up with Concordia (11-9, 9-7 ASC) . After scoring the opening basket of the game, the Cowboys were outscored 14-3 over the first few minutes of the game before eventually falling to the Tornados 106-78 in Austin.
It was a record setting night for Concordia as they set records for the most points scored at Concordia Fieldhouse and the largest margin of victory, 28 points. Nick Haynes had a career high 25 points and his six three-pointer tied a Concordia Fieldhouse record. Teammate Brad Walker scorched the nets for 24-points as he came of the bench and shot 7-of-17 to help the Tornados top 100 points on the night.
Concordia came out with a high level of energy and by the 7:10 mark of the first half the were out in front by 16 points with a 40-24 lead. Nick Haynes hot the hot hand early as he connected on four three-pointers to help the Tornados build their lead.
Brad Walker scored nine points over the next seven minutes of play to help Concordia take a double digit lead into the locker room at the half. Concordia shot 47.6 percent from the field to Hardin-Simmons 56 percent but it was the hustle on defense that helped make the difference for the Tornados as they forced the Cowboys in to 19 first half turnovers which led to 23 points. The Tornados also got a huge boost from their bench in the first half with their reserves pouring in 27 points.
Hardin-Simmons had little luck cutting in to the Concordia lead in the second half as they trailed by 10 or more points until the 9:13 mark when a Tyson Denton tip-in cut the lead to eight points at 77-69.
Concordia then went on a huge run as they outscored the Cowboys 21-4 over the next eight minutes of play to send the lead all the way out to 102-73 with just 1:35 left in the game. Reza Farahani ignited the scoring blitz with a 3-pointer and then Tayler Jacobs followed with back-to-back baskets.
The Tornados hit several free throws with just seconds on the clock before coming away with the lopsided 106-78 win.
Concordia’s Nick Haynes led all scorers with 25 points. Brad Walker finished with 24 points, two blocks, and seven rebounds.
Hardin-Simmons John Derr led the Cowboys in scoring with his 23 points and teammate Casey Riddle chipped in with 12 points and seven assists.
