Brenham earns trip to state championship game after strong fourth quarter powers win over Tivy

GEORGETOWN — Brenham (13-2) and Kerrville Tivy (9-5) traded blows for most of the game Saturday as they fought for a berth in the Class 4A Division II State Championship game next Saturday. Thanks to a couple of big fourth quarter plays by Brenham, Tivy will have to wait until next year for their chance as they dropped a 31-21 decision to the Cubs.

It was Tivy that struck first when Mikhail Ironside hit Johnny Manziel with a 79-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage as they caught the Cubs by surprise with a big play early on.

Brenham quarterback Ty Schlottmann made sure the Cubs didn’t panic as he led the offense to 21 first half points with two touchdown passes to Derek Edwards and one to Terrell Reese. Tivy hung tough themselves and traded scores with the Cubs resulting in a 21-21 tie at halftime.

Neither team was able to score in the third quarter as both defenses looked to give their offense a chance to claim the win.

Brenham put together a fourth quarter drive that had them sitting at the Tivy 35-yard line facing a fourth-and-1. The Cubs decided to go for it with Schlottmann running left on the keeper. The Tivy defense closed in on Schlottmann hoping to come up with a big stop and he played it just right. Troy Greene took the pitch from Schlottmann and burst through the defense for a 35-yard touchdown run to put the Cubs up 28-21 with 5:32 left.

Tivy then got the ball back looking to answer but things changed in a hurry. The Cubs Jeremy Hall stripped the ball and recovered the fumble allowing Brenham to kick a field goal moments later resulting in two score lead at 31-21 with less than two minutes to play in the game.

Brenham’s Ty Schlottmann finished with 196 yards passing completing 17-of-30 pass attempts with three touchdowns and a one interception. He also had 57 yards rushing on 15 attempts. Teammate Troy Green rushed for 86 yards on 21 attempts with one touchdown. Derek Edwards had two touchdowns on 9 receptions for 105 yards.

Tivy was led by Quarterback Johnny Manziel’s 98 yards rushing on 10 carries with one touchdown. He passed for 148 yards on 10-of-27 with one touchdown pass and was intercepted 3 times.

Brenham will now face Aledo in the championship game next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Texas-Memorial Stadium. Aledo defeated Denison 40-28 to earn their berth in the title game.
